DC Historic Tours
When Boalt, a social media agency in D.C. approached us to help develop an innovative way to browse historical government data, we were sold on the idea immediately. What's more is the application would be entered in a Website development contest. We combed through the various government datasets available and came up with a cool concept - the ability to build your own walking tours and share with others. The resulting product is DC Historic Tours, which layers government historical sites, districts, and landmarks via a beautiful interface on top of Google Maps. We figured people would want to eat along the way, so we blended in Yelp.com's data. Also, for those who desire a bit more background and visual reference, we also include datasets from the Wikipedia and Flickr. Yeah - it was a fun project!
This "Government 2.0" project ended up taking first place in the Agency category of the 2008 Apps for Democracy competition.
